Mrs. George Hall Laid To Rest Monday Afternoon
Mrs. George Hall passed away Friday, October 6th, 1944 at the home of her sister, Mrs. S. J. Hall, in Geneva, where she had gone a week before to spend the winter.
Mary Jane Abbott was born in Schuyler county, Missouri, June 17th, 1858, she being 86 years, 3 months and 19 days old at the time of her death.
She grew to womanhood in the county in which she was born and it was there also that she married George Hall, March 2nd, 1879.
In 1885 they came to Nebraska, locating in Fillmore county, where they operated a general store for several years. Then farming attracted them, so they purchased a farm in Thayer county. Later they bought a farm south of the river in Webster county, on which they remained for two years.
From there they went to a farm near Bird City, Kansas. There they made their home until 1924 when they returned to Red Cloud and here they lived happily until the passing of Mr. Hall, on March 22nd, 1939, just three weeks after they had celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.
Besides the sister mentioned above Mrs. Hall is survived by three sons, Charles of Portland Oregon; Tom of Geneva, Nebraska; and Earl of Denver, Colorado, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Eugene Golay, from the Congregational-Christian Church, on Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with interment in the city cemetery.
Pall bearers were A. Beams, Don Fulton, Bert Anderson, George Ecklor, D. B. Burden and Lee Derr. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Yung, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Mountford sang, with a Mrs. Carl Gass playing their piano accompaniment.
Short funeral services had also been held earlier in the day, at Geneva, as Mrs. Hall's sister, Mrs. Lizzie Hall, was unable to make the trip here. At this service, Mrs. Oscar Nelson, a sister-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Beams, sang.
Mrs. Hall was truly a remarkable woman in many ways. She was an excellent business woman, successfully handling her property and money unassisted up to the very last. Her firm convictions and brisk manner were softened by a sense of humor, which made a jolly companion for both old and young. She did not seem to be nearly as old as her years, and her youthful outlook on life in general was most refreshing. Big-hearted, she was constantly doing nice things for others, helping them over rough spots, quietly and without ostentation.
