Daughter of Woodrow and Anna (Boettiger) Downs. She moved with her family to Clyde, North Dakota when she was a young girl. After graduating from Bruce High School in Clyde, she attended Maryville State College and became a public schoolteacher in the Inkster and Midway, North Dakota school districts. She married Tilford Bjornstad on June 15, 1945 in Clyde and they moved to a farm west of Inkster. She was a member of the Fordville, North Dakota Lutheran Church.
