MOTLEY — Gerald E. Stevens, age 81, of Motley, passed away at St. Cloud Hospital on Sunday, July 1, 2012. A funeral service is planned for Friday at 11 a.m. at the Motley United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Motley Public Cemetery.
Jerry was born on Sept. 13, 1930, in Staples, Minn., to Cecil and Clara (Henderson) Stevens. He attended Staples Public School, graduating in 1948. In the fall of 1948, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving until 1954. In April of 1952, he married Faye Jenkins, and they had four children. In the early years of their marriage, they lived in various cities, while Jerry worked different jobs, until returning to Motley in 1971. In 1973, they purchased the Hitchin Post Grill and Tavern. Jerry also worked for the Motley School District and was well known in the community. He enjoyed all sports, playing and coaching, baseball, football, basketball, and track. As a member of the Motley United Methodist Church, he enjoyed singing in the choir and serving with the men's club. He was also a member of the Motley American Legion - Tri County Post. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 60 years, Faye; children, Mike (Sheila), Michelle (OJ) Judge, and Mitchell (Deb); seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Mark.
