Commissioned as 2d Lieutenant, Company A ("Muckalee Guards"), 12th Regiment, Georgia (Volunteer) Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, Confederate States Army 15 Jun 1861. Wounded at the Battle of Allegheny Mountain/Battle of Camp Allegheny, Va 13 Dec 1861. Appointed Captain and Assistant Quartermaster 2 Feb 1862. Resigned 14 Mar 1863. Appointed Aide-de-Camp, 13th Senatorial District Ga Militia, Captain 25 May 1864.

He served as a delegate to Georgia state constitutional convention in 1868, as a justice of the Georgia state supreme court from 1868 to 1875, and as Judge of United States District Court in 1882.
