Thomas worked as a clerk, and later in his life farmed. He married Jean about 1872. They had at least one child, Frances "(Fannie").

He enlisted as a Private in Company "H", 9th Virginia Cavalry on 10 June 1861, and was discharged for disability on 14 January 1862. While working in the Auditor's Office of the C. S. Treasury Department, he enlisted in Company "D", 3rd Regiment, Richmond Local Defense Troops on 20 June 1863, and served through at least September 1864.

He was first buried in his father's plot in Shockoe Hill Cemetery. His remains were disinterred and moved to Hollywood on 21 April 1891.
