John Richard Davis was born in Fayette County, TN about 1830, the son of Archibald and Jane Douthitt. He married Louisa Ann Joslin (daughter of Daniel Joslin and Nancy Peel) about 1850 in Mississippi. They had 5 daughters, Nancy J., Millie J. "Georgia", Mary E., Sarah B., and Louella. According to John's Civil War Service Record, he was 5' 10", had a fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and was a farmer when he enlisted in 1862 in Co K, "Luka Rifles", of the 2nd Mississippi Regiment.
He died of disease in the Richmond Hospital on 31st May 1862 (according to his military papers).
Neither of his parents have marked graves in Mississippi. He and his wife only had girls,
