Denton Young Brewerton, 86, of Rexburg died Sunday Aug. 8, 2004, at a Pocatello hospital. He was born Feb. 26, 1918, in Raymond, Alberta, to Charles and Phyllis Young Brewerton. He married Vera Walz January 8, 1943, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Denton attended schools in Alberta and in Salt Lake City. Then he attended Ricks College in Rexburg and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1949. He was employed as a reporter for United Press International and as a reporter for the Idaho Statesman in Boise, where he was also the state and rodeo editor. In 1960 he was named the Rodeo Writer of the Year by the Idaho Cowboys Association. Later he became the chairman of the Journalism Department at Ricks, where he taught for 18 years. He also worked part time at the Holiday Theater for 30 years. From 1939 to 1942, Denton served a mission for the LDS Church in Argentina. He also served his church in many positions, including high councilor, bishopric member at Ricks, Sunday School president and member of the Seven Presidents of 70. He served his country during World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps. He is survived by his wife, Vera W. Brewerton; children, J. Ned (Nancy) Brewerton of Rexburg, Marilyn (Terrance) Jarrett of Ontario, Canada, and Colleen Brewerton of Rexburg; seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services conducted Friday, August 13 at the Rexburg LDS North Stake Center by Bishop Greg Edwards. Burial will be at the Rexburg Cemetary with military rites by the Madison County Veterans Team.
