James Monroe Rickman was the son of Telitha (Elam) Rickman and the brother of Sallie Rickman (abt. 1846 Tennessee), Hannah Rickman (abt. 1847 Tennessee), William Rickman (abt. 1849 Tennessee), and Cora E. (Rickman) Shaffer (abt. 1850 Tennessee.) Civil War, he served in Company K of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He served from 1863 to 1865 and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic after the war. James was married at least twice. He married Matilda (unk.) before the war and together, they had Delila , Annetta , Claudes , Arda , Leslie and Blanche. He married Amanda M. (unk.) some time after 1880, and together they had Virginia Marie , in addition to adding her children James R. and Pearl Williams to the family from a previous marriage.
