BESSIE OMEGA BURKE (1895-1966)
...was born in Dexter, Stoddard, Missouri, with right leg 1.5 inches shorter than the other. Her parents were HENRY HERBERT 'HARRY' BURKE and NANCY ARABELLE DUNGY.
Bessie lived and traveled with her parents and siblings across the U.S.; Washington, Colorado and then California where she met and married her first and only husband ANDREW GORDON MARSHALL, an Irish immigrant.
Andrew was a widower, considerably older than Bessie, with grown sons living in the Mid-West. It is believed that they met where they both worked... at Citrus Soap Factory, San Diego, CA (USA).
When they married and started their family, Bessie stayed home with the kids. All of their sons survived well into their adult years. Sadly Albert was sent away to state hospitals; institutionalized (from age 5), per Dr's orders, for behavioral 'problems.' His brothers never saw him again. For more about the Marshall boy's BIO's, see their memorials:
ROBERT GORDON MARSHALL (1914-1997)
ALBERT EDWARD MARSHALL (1916-1977)
WALLACE JAMES MARSHALL (1923-1994)

Andrew had been a successful Soap Maker for many years and was a very good provider throughout the 1920s. When the U.S. economy crashed, then 'aging' Andrew traveled South to Mexico to work, sending wages home to the family; leaving Bessie to run the house and raise the boys without a father figure.
Andrew probably, literally worked himself to death in 1931 (age 79), leaving Bessie a widow in her mid-30s. From what we know, she and the boys survived with the assistance of family members living in So. Calif.
It appears that Bessie never remarried. We know very little about Bessie's life from 1931 until her death 1966. Her Death Certificate indicates that she had been ill for the last twenty years of her life. It appears that she died alone in a No. Calif. state-run hospital without the aid and/or comfort of family members. We don't know if her sons knew of her whereabouts and/or if they were in touch with her, once they attained adult status and left home.
