CORTLAND - A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Claughton Cemetery Chapel, Waynesburg, Pa., for James Arthur Varner, 64, of 2369 Greenville Road N.E., Mecca Township, who died of cancer Wednesday morning at home.
Mr. Varner was born March 10, 1927, in Waynesburg, a son of James L. and Etheal Rose Varner. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He retired in 1985 as a machinist at Van Huffel Tube in Warren after 35 years' service. He moved to Mecca in 1954 from Warren.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7614 of Johnston, and the Cortland Moose Lodge No. 1012.
He leaves his wife, the former Sara Stephenson, whom he married in 1946; two daughters, Mrs. Candace Asebrook Of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Tawna Brown of Midlothian, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Louise Taylor of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Mrs. Kathleen Teagarden and Mrs. Olivedel Hughes, both of Waynesburg; and three grandchildren. A brother, Charles, is deceased.
There are no calling hours. Local arrangements were made by Shafer-Winans Funeral Home. The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to Hospice of Trumbull County.
