Our Great-Grandmother, Mary Frances Hively Baker, died Feb 6, 1914 in Walnut Twp., Gallia County, Ohio. She was born Sept. 17, 1841 in Gallia County, the daughter of Jonathan Hively (1819-1860) and Elizabeth Catherine Watts (1818-1875) . She was the widow of Cpl. Newton A Baker, who was killed in 1864 in the Civil War. They were married on Dec 20, 1857, in Gallia Co, Ohio, solemnized by Andrew Bostick J.P. , and were the parents of three children, John Henry, Elizabeth Ellen and Newton Joseph Baker. Great-Grandmother never remarried, remaining a widow until her death.

MARY FRANCES BAKER
An aged Christian lady of Waterloo departed this life on the 6th of February, 1914, at the home of her son, Mr. Joseph Baker. She had reached the age of 72 years 4 months and 19 days. Mother Baker was left a widow in July 1864 by the death of her companion on the field of battle. For nearly fifty years she remained a widow, cared for her little family until they were gown, loved everybody, and especially the church of her choice where she was a membership for sixty years. The funeral service was conducted in the old church where she had worshiped so long. Her pastor had the service in charge, assisted by Rev. Bostick of the U B Church. The casket was carried to the cemetery on the hill in Waterloo, following behind were her son, Joseph and daughter, Ellen Wilson, and a large congregation of neighbors and friends. It is understood that her other son, John, who resides at Topeka, Kas., was not able to attend. She leaves four brothers and three sisters; Andy (Andrew) Hively of O.; Mac (John McIntyre) Hively of Hilton, O.; Winfield Hively of Gallia, O.; David Hively of Jackson, O., Mrs. Frank (Matilda) Bostick of Patriot, O.; Mrs. John (Lucinda) Irions of Missouri; and Mrs. Ed (Martha) Strait of Iowa .
