Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He enlisted in the Union Army in April 1861 upon the outset of the war, and served as a Private in Company D, 25th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry until July 1861. When the 25th Pennsylvania was mustered out at the end of its three-month enlistment, he recieved a commission as 1st Lieutenant in first the 7th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, then the 49th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. From there he was detailed to be an aide-de-camp on the staff of Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. He served prominently with General Hancock at the Battles of Gettysburg, The Wilderness and Spotsylvania, rising to Lieutenant Colonel. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "distinguished and most valuable services during the war". A civil engineer prior to the War, he remained in the Regular Army after then end of the conflict, and passed away while on active duty at Governor's Island, New York City while holding the rank of Major. He was the step-son of Union brevet General William H. Irwin, and was the son-in-law of Brevet General Madison Mills.
