A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Franklintown, York County, August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 6 as a corporal with Co. I, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865. He should not be confused with an older Martin Lau who also served with Co. I, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry.
In 1880, he lived in Mechanicsburg where he was a member of Zinn Post, No. 415, G.A.R. and where he died from "stoppage of bowels." His death certificate spells his middle name and his mother's maiden name "Low."
