CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Retired U.S. Navy Capt. L. James Baird, 86, formerly of Charles Town, died Friday, Nov. 7, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born April 14, 1911, in DeWitt, Iowa, he was the son of the late Herbert J. and Kathryn Haring Baird.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Somers.

He was a 1929 graduate of DeWitt High School. He also was a 1935 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, where he lettered in football. He was a graduate of Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and obtained his master's degree in education at Indiana University.

He served on USS Helena CL50 during the attack on Pearl Harbor and when the ship was sunk in Kula Gulf, July 6, 1943. He earned 11 battle stars in World War II, the Navy Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star for his service in the Pacific. He had command of the USS Goodrich DDR831, ComDesDiv. 182/192, USS Naval Ammunition Depot in Crane, Ind.

Upon retiring from the Navy, he taught math and naval science at North Chicago, Ill., high school until retirement in 1976.

In 1978, he moved to Charles Town.

He was an active member of Charles Town Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of the American Legion, Adam Stephen Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, Charles Town Evening Kiwanis Club and 40 and 8 Voiture No. 1356, Charles Town.

He is survived by his wife, Kyle Foley Baird, whom he married on Jan. 10, 1954; one daughter, Terry Baird Jones of Virginia Beach, Va.; one son, James F. Baird of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends at the Presbyterian Church, East Washington Street, Charles Town. Burial will be in DeWitt.
