Carl August Hermann Belz was born in Sehmsdorf, Kreis Pyritz, Pommern Provence, Prussia the son of Friedrich "Wilhelm" Gottlieb Belz and Johanne "Ernstine" Auguste Pauline (Albrecht) Belz. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1884 with his parents and two older brothers leaving from the port of Bremen and arriving at the port of Baltimore, Maryland on May 7, 1884. The Belz family settled in Le Sueur, Le Sueur County, Minnesota. Carl attended the public schools of Le Sueur. On April 24, 1893 he was confirmed into the christian faith in Zion Evangelical and Reformed church of Le Sueur of which he remained a life time member.

Carl was united in marriage on January 12, 1916 to Anna Friederike "Bertha" Rohloff in Henderson Township, Sibley County, Minnesota. Following their marriage the couple engaged in farming until the time of his death. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Carl Wilhelm Belz and Mrs. Bernice (Jack) Yaeger.

Carl August Herman Belz passed away at his Sibley County farm home at 11 p.m. on April 14 at the age of 67 year, 6 months and 16 days. He suffered from a coronary ailment beginning in 1944 which in the past month became very severe and forced his entrance into the hospital and eventually caused his death.
