Agnes was born in 1896. She was the daughter of Thomas Boyd and Annie Fuqua. Her father became President of Louisiana State University the month she was born, in 1896, and held that position for 30 years. Her mother's brother was Governor of Louisiana, Henry Fuqua.


Her father named her after Agnes Irvine Scott whose son was a founder and major benefactor to Agnes Scott College which was established in Decatur, Georgia in 1889, a few years before Agnes Scott Boyd was born.


Agnes attended All Saints Episcopal College for women in Vicksburg, Mississippi and graduated from LSU in about 1917.
