Son of Charles Burns and Mary Morris Burns.
In 1777 William along with his father Charles and brothers all of the age 16 or older took the oath of Allegiance to Virginia and the New United States.
William served in the Virginia forces in Gen Christy's campaign against the Cherokee Indians in east Tennessee in July 1776. Under Capt Martin Luit Brice Martin and ensign John Martin.
After the Cherokee campaign in December 10 1776 William enlisted for 6 months garrison duty along with 600 men, in July 1777 the Cherokee signed a treaty and William returned to Henry county Virginia. William moved to Wilkes county, North Carolina by 1778 ,Where He enlisted in the Wilkes co North Carolina Militia under Micajah Lewis Co of Col. Gordon's regt. he later hired a sub to finish his tour of enlistment.
Five of his brothers also fought against the cherokee Indians. John, Andrew, Alexander and Samuel.
