Jacob, son of Nicholas Erb, was a member of a Mennonite family that emigrated to Pennsylvania from Switzerland. Soon after he reached the age of majority, he began acquiring significant tracts of land on the Middle Creek in Ephrata and Old Warwick Townships where he built mills and, later, in the settlement of Clay.

At the time of the American Revolution he was 52 years of age but nonetheless became an ardent supporter of independence. From 1786-1790 he served in the Pennsylvania General Assembly.
