James B. Shook was born in Indiana in 1838. He was a member of Capital Lodge No. 2, A.O.U.W., and lived in Helena for many years. For 21 years, he worked as a tinner in the tinshop of Clarke, Conrad & Curtin and later became the foreman. On January 1, 1888, at age 50, James died at St. John's Hospital from pneumonia. The attending physician was Steele. (Helena Daily Herald, 1/3/1888) On January 2, John Curtin ordered the following from Herrmann & Co: burial casket and outside box $70.00, digging of grave by Schmidt $6.00, Zeigler's hearse $15.00, two carriages $10.00, removing corpse to the hall $2.50, total $103.50, credit of $6.00 was given for digging of the grave.
