During World War II, Ray was a pilot in the first night fighter squadron. Before being discharged, he had attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Ray met his future wife, Betty Ann Brockhouse (1922 - 2006), at the Northeast YMCA in Kansas City, Missouri in 1948. After a year and a half of courting they became engaged on December 24, 1949. They were married on June 10, 1950, at the Independence Boulevard Christian Church in Kansas City, Missouri.
Betty and Ray had four children: Susan, Linda, Steven, and Laura. Ray lived with his family in Brimingham, Alabama and worked for the Y.M.C.A. for most of his adult life.
Ray passed away on December 11, 2003 in Brimingham, Alabama.
