US Army Major General. He joined the North Carolina National Guard in 1894, and was a first lieutenant by the time of the Spanish-American War. He served in Cuba, and in 1899 obtained an Army commission, after which he served in the Philippines. He graduated from the Artillery School in 1904, and after serving in Coast Artillery assignments in the eastern United States, in 1911 he was assigned as military attaché in Chile. In 1916 he was assigned to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, where he commanded a Coast Artillery battalion, after which he commanded the 5th Provisional Coast Artillery Regiment in Texas during the Pancho Villa Expedition. During World War I he served first as chief of staff of the 40th Division, and then as chief of staff of First United States Army Artillery. He graduated from the Army War College in 1924. In 1930 he was appointed chief of Coast Artillery, and he served until 1934. He then served as commander of the Brooklyn, New York Point of Embarkation, the 2nd Coast Artillery District, and the Artillery Center at Fort Monroe, Virginia before retiring in 1938. His awards included the Distinguished Service Medal and the French Legion of Honor.
