Bernice M. Haas, 91, died Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Manor Care Nursing in Wichita. She was born April 28, 1921, in Lincoln County, to Emil and Margaret Persegehl Gier.
A homemaker and farm wife, Mrs. Haas was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Garden City, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, VFW Auxiliary, Senior Center of Finney County and the Trinity Lutheran Get Together Girls.
On March 21, 1942, she married John James Simpson in Lincoln County. He died Oct. 30, 1964. On Jan. 23, 1971, she married Elmer W. Haas Jr. in Garden City. He died Dec. 9, 2000. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Sandra Russell; three brothers, Melvin, Donald and Eldon Gier; and two sisters, Viola Troeger and Faye Urbach.
Survivors include two sons, Terry Gene Simpson and wife Norma Jean of Hutchinson, and Noel James Simpson and wife Norma Jean of Garden City; a son-in-law, R. Harvey Russell of McPherson; a sister, Elaine Lyon and husband LaVern of Salina; grandchildren Robin Murphy, Ryan Simpson, Kathie Craig and Neil Simpson; great-grandchildren MaKenzie Simpson, Zachary Simpson, Megan Murphy, Madeline Murphy, Zander Craig and Zane Craig; stepgrandchildren Scott Russell, Vicki Churchman and Lisa Knoll; and stepgreat-grandchildren Lauran Russell, Russell Rhea and Branee Knoll.
Funeral will begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Garden City. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.
