Fred was raised on a farm where all the members (12) worked to make the farm run. The year of 1901 found him working at a creamery in Millbrook, Illinois. After his marriage to Helen Bretthauer in 1906 they moved to Adaza, Iowa and then in 1907 along with Helen's parents, August and Caroline Betthauer they settled in Lohrville, Calhoun Co. Iowa. He farmed until 1943 when they moved into Pomeroy.
