Giovanni (John) was the eldest son of Rocco and Rosa Cheneler (Cerniglia) born in Santo Stefano di Camastra, Sicily in 1882. He came to America in 1901 at the age of 19. He married Nina Serio in 1904 in Galesburg, Illinois, the daughter of Peter Serio and Sarah Buggieri. Children of John and Nina: Rocco b. 1907, Rosa b. 1908, Peter b. 1911, Regina b. 1915, Joseph b. 1917, Sarah b. 1923, Alfonso b. 1926 and Lee b. 1930. John worked as a distributer of wholesale produce.
