John was born on Prather's Creek in Ashe County, North Carolina. The area is now part of Alleghany County North Carolina. John's family migrated first to Whitley County, Kentucky then to Putnam County, Illinois where John served in the Black Hawk War as a Corporal in Captain William Haw's Company.
John's first wife was Permelia Anna Cain, about 1828 or 1829 in Knox or Whitley County, Kentucky. Their marriage record has not been found. Permelia is a daughter of Daniel and Temperance Vannoy Cain of Knox County, Kentucky.
The family later migrated to Polk County, Iowa then to Grundy, now Mercer County, Missouri. Permelia died between 1840 and 1845 in Mercer County and is buried in either Goshen Cemetery with John Hart's parents or in the Cain Cemetery with her brother Peter Cain.
Records showing where John lived were lost in a 1898 fire in the Mercer County courthouse.
John was married twice and was the father of 15 known children.

John's DOD of June 1870 might not be correct as he is listed in the 1870 Harrison Twp, Mercer County, Missouri census, dated Sept 02, 1870.
