Byron L. Turner died at home on Sunday, July 8, 2012. He was born March 4, 1922 in Oasis, Utah to Arthur Mason and Drucilla Gillins Turner. Of that day he wrote, "I recall very little about that day expect that I was naked and probably embarrassed."
Byron graduated from Logan High School and Utah State University. He logged 1200 hours as an active duty C47 Air Force pilot in Europe from 1944 to 1947 and retired as a Lt. Colonel after serving 20 years on reserve status.
Byron "pinned" Beverly Judd at a Pi Kappa Alpha bowery party in the fall of 1947 and they were married in the Logan Temple on May 18, 1948. Beverly died December 12, 1989 after a seven year struggle with cancer.
Byron worked for over 50 years as an independent insurance agent and was a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). For most of his career he owned and ran the Byron L. Turner Agency which was later merged with the Leavitt Group of Salt Lake. He was president of the Cache County Agents Association and served in the Utah Association of Insurance Agents as a member of the Board of Directors, Legislative Chairman and Association President.
Byron had a strong testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was called to serve in various leadership positions including twice as Bishop, once in the Holladay 12th Ward and again in the University 16th Ward. From 2002 to 2004 he served as a senior missionary in the Utah Salt Lake City mission. Most significantly to those who love him in this life, he was all that is most important in the next life.
Byron was an avid jogger. In addition to the annual family Turner Trot 10K running event, he ran in three marathons, the St. George Marathon at age 63 and the Deseret News marathon when he was 65 and 70 years old. He served as a volunteer for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Grandpa T is survived by his five children, Judd (Mary Anne) Turner, Dan (Verna) Turner, Robert (Stacy) Turner, Laurel (Robert) Myers and Jill (Scott) Benson; 21 grandchildren and eight (almost 10) great-grandchildren; siblings Maurine (Lyle) Burt and Newell (Janice) Turner. Preceded in death by brothers Marden, Lowell and Eyre.
Viewings will be held on Friday July 13 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 So., SLC Utah and Saturday, July 14 from 9:30-10:40 a.m. at the Olympus Hills LDS Chapel, 4176 S Adonis Drive (3950 E), SLC Utah.
