Shortly after the Civil War he brought his family to Indiana where his brother, Thomas Beebe Van Aernam had located a decade earlier. After his wife's death in 1872 he moved to Omaha, NE, where his sister Eliza Van Aernam Williams (1829-1903) had moved with her husband, Lorenzo (1828-1911) in 1868. In Omaha he engaged in the dry goods and clothing businesses for many years.
