CARROLL E."CJ" JOHNSON, 67, alta, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta with Pastor Lil Johnston officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery at a later date.

Carroll Eugene "CJ" Johnson was born May 25, 1935 in Webster City, the son of Eugene Ernest and Bernice Geneva Berven Johnson. He was graduated from Webster City High School in 1955 and went to the University of Iowa on a full-ride football scholarship. He was on the 1957 Hawkeye Rose Bowl Team. CJ served in the United States Army active duty and the Army National Guard. He was married to Marlene Powell for 20 years and they had three children. In 1970, CJ was transferred to Storm Lake with Hygrade. He worked for the North Central Line Service, then owned and operated CJ's Pizza Restaurant, both in Alta. He went to work as a jailer for the Buena Vista Sheriff's Department in Storm Lake, retiring in 1997 after 15 years.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta. His family was his greatest joy. He was a loyal Hawkeye fan and enjoyed watching Hawkeye sports events; he also like gradening, cooking and was an avid reader. He had a very faithful friend for 13 years in his Black Labrador, Blue girl.

His family includes his children, Toni & Kevin Hammer of Alta, Tracy Johnson & special friend, Dan Strand of Alta, Lee & Bradley Martin of Storm Lake; five grandchildren, Jamie & Jahde Hammer, Jeremiah & Michelle Ruby, and James Martin. Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister and a brother-in-law.
