Civil War Union Army Surgeon. He was commissioned as Chief Surgeon of the 28th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 15, 1862, and was mustered into the regiment on September 22, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, and the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville, and was honorably mustered out on July 6, 1863.

On October 5, 1865 he filed for a US Army Invalid Veteran Pension (Application #148712, Certificate #101170).

In 1865 his wife, Abbie Newell, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #185262, Certificate #147469).

Married Abigail Newell.

Younger Brother of New Jersey Governor William Augustus Newell.
