She attended Hibbing schools and moved to Chisholm after marrying Louis Oberstar in 1933, where she resided ever since.
Mary worked for several years as a seamstress at Arrow Shirt Factory, Chisholm. She was active in community theater in the 1930s and 1940s, Chisholm Moose Club, Catholic Order of Foresters and Slovenian National Home, of which Louis was a charter member.
An active participant in a bowling league for more than 30 years, Mary played on several teams and competed with her team at state and regional competitions. She stopped bowling at age 84.
Mary was best known for baking and cooking, especially her potica, for which she took numerous orders at holiday times. Mary never missed voting in an election, including the most recent election on Nov. 3.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis on May 24, 1985; a sister, Conchetta; and a brother, Heinie.
Mary is survived by her sons: James L. (Jean) Oberstar, Congressman representing Minnesota's 8th District, David L. (Sharron) Oberstar, Ph.D., and Thomas H. (Gail) Oberstar; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Burial in Chisholm Cemetery.
