A lifelong Chisholm resident, he graduated from Chisholm High School in 1934. He was an Army veteran of World War II with service in the European theater, where he earned the Bronze Star. He married Dorothy M. Badiali on Sept. 30, 1946, in Chisholm. He owned and operated Prebil Plumbing and Heating in Chisholm for many years. He then became superintendent of buildings and grounds at the former Chisholm Memorial Hospital and later at Hibbing General Hospital. He retired in 1984 from Central Mesabi Medical Center.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chisholm, Knights of Columbus-Chisholm Council 3539, Gamache Assembly-Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus in Hibbing, VFW Post 8510 of Hibbing, Moose Lodge 226 in Chisholm, All Slav Club 9 of Chisholm, and the Slovenian National Home in Chisholm. He also served on both the Chisholm School Board and the Chisholm Charter Commission for several years.
His parents were Bernard Sr. and Johanna (Cesare) Prebil.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son, John; three daughters: Kathy Celley, Patty Vanderlin, and Bunny Husten; two brothers, Lou, and Stan; a sister, Mary Huff; and five grandchildren.
Burial will be in Chisholm Cemetery.
