Alex was the third of nine children born to John Thomas and Frances (Smelter) Wolak. He worked on his family's farm all his life. He didn't marry until November 22, 1945 to Beata Marie Brand but the marriage ended in divorce. Together they had 11 children: John Vincent, Mary Annette, Theres Frances, Ralph Joseph, Elizabeth Claire, Mark Anthony, Giles Edward, Margaret Mary, Eve, Amy Marie, and Roseann Marie. Beata and Alex divorced in 1973.
