Ensign B. C. Kern, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #12021 in 1942. Entered active service via the Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program.

Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Kern and his crew of five were killed when their Lockheed PV-1 Ventura patrol bomber aircraft crashed on takeoff at Zandery Field, Dutch Guiana (now Suriname).

Ironically LTJG Kern, and all but one crewman, had survived a night-time ditching at sea on 23 Oct. 1943 off the Dutch Guiana coast.
