Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Kern and his crew of five were killed when their Lockheed PV-1 Ventura patrol bomber aircraft crashed on takeoff at Zandery Field, Dutch Guiana (now Suriname).
Ironically LTJG Kern, and all but one crewman, had survived a night-time ditching at sea on 23 Oct. 1943 off the Dutch Guiana coast.
