Walter Washburn, the son of James W. and Judith (Griffin) Washburn, a Quaker family from Ulster Co., NY, has been mentioned in several history books. He is the grandson of Daniel Washburn, an American Revolutionary soldier. Daniel's home was near the White Plains Battlefield, and his home served as a temporary hospital at that battle.

Walter first married Penelope "Nellie" Van Benschoten, a Methodist. She died in 1828 and is buried in Wawarsing. see " Concerning the Van Bunschoten or Van Benschoten family in America: a genealogy and brief history (Google eBook)William Henry Van Benschoten A. V. Haight Co., 1907 - 813 pages".
Walter married again to Polly Hendrickson Van Benschoten, the widow of Gilbert Van Benschoten, his former brother-in-law.
He was father of seven children: Julia Ann (b. Nov. 11, 1811), Henry Griffin( b. May 31, 1813), Louisa (b. Dec. 27, 1816), John, (b. March 24, 1819), Hannah Jane (b. March 21, 1821), Maria, (b. June 7, 1826),and Julia Ann.

He arrived in Fitchville area in 1833 and resumed farming. Of additional interest is that "The Firelands pioneer, Volume 13 (Google eBook) Firelands Historical Society,The Society, 1900" pg. 775, notes that Walter is a direct decendant of John Washburn, a Mayflower passenger and secretary of Plymouth Colony.
