PVT Mortimer Clark enlisted in the Third Independent Battery, Wisconsin Volunteer Light Artillery on September 3, 1861. His unit fought in the Western Theater and participated in the advance on Corinth, the Kentucky Campaign (though not engaged at the Battle of Perryville), and the Battle of Stones River. At Murfreesboro, the unit garnered praise for its work at McFadden's Ford and took part in repelling Breckenridge's assault on January 2, 1863. PVT Mortimer Clark died of disease at Murfreesboro less than one month after that battle.
