Kapitan Wanins home town was Kiev. He was the Captain of the submarine "KOMSOMOLEZ", 1984-1989. On the 7th of April, after a damage of a highpressure-air-tube hydraulic-oil gets out on a hot surface and starts a fire. One crew-man was enclosed and died. The Reactor-SCRAM was done immediately and the submarine surfaced. But the fire got out of control. They had to leave the boat. The Emergency-Shuttle was filled with toxic smoke. 42 crew-men died, most in the ice-cold water. Some were injured by fire and smoke. They had no time to put on their rescue-suits. Kapitan Vanin helped a man to leave the boat, then he was the last to leave the sinking "KOMSOMOLEZ". In the icy coldness of the water he was left by his forces and drowned.
