She was a very special friend, & intensely loyal, said one of Mrs Mingledorff's three daughters, Jerry S. Gentry Sylvania. She was articulate & interested in her community, in education & in the medical field.
A Screven County native, Mrs Mingledorff was the daughter of the late John C. Cail, a doctor who built the county's first hospital. She was the widow of the late Vernon "Catfish" Smith, a University of Georgia football great, the late George B. Lorimer, & the late W. Lee Mingledorff, a Savannah mayor from 1954 to 1960.
She owned & operated Milhaven Plantation, one of the Southeast's largest farms, for more than 45 years, said her son-in-law, Charles C. Gentry. The 23,000 acre farm produces, cotton, peanuts, soybeans & timber, he said.
She had a tremendous love for the land, & an even greater thrist for the land to produce as much as nature would allow it to produce, said Bill Craven, a retired agent from the University of Ga cooperative Extension Service in Burke County. It was unique for a lady of her time to farm with such intensity, & to farm such a vast acreage. She was a leader in the field of agriculture.
A member of Sylvania First United Methodist Church, She was active in the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society & the arts. A University of Ga. graduate, she generously supported local schools & hospitals & sponsored scholarships for several people to attend medical school, college & seminary.
She cared very much for the environment, Ms Gentry said. A lot of times, she gave w/o a person even knowing who was giving it.
She was a tower of strength, said Wm S. Morris III, a longtime friend & present owner of Milhaven Plantation. She overcame much adversity in her life & was an example of pweseverance & character to all who knew her.
She owned, built & operated one of the region's most successful farms during a period of difficulty & adverse economic agricultural times. Her character, generosity & perseverance have benefited many people. Our region is blessed to have had her in our midst.
