Charles R. "Tinker" Asbell, 50, died unexpectedly July 13th, 2012 at his home in Brunswick. Coach Asbell, as he was known, was a retired educator and football coach.
Born in Perry, Fla., he was the son of the late Rick and Judy Paris Asbell. He grew up in Conyers and moved to Brunswick in 1971. Tinker excelled in a multitude of athletic endeavors: He won seven American Drug Free Powerlifting State Championships, earned a second-degree black belt in Shotokan and was known to hit softballs over the net and onto Gloucester Street at the City Rec. After being a part of Sonny Miller's All-Stars traveling team, he went on to play on the varsity offensive line for Glynn Academy. After graduating high school in 1979, he continued playing football in college, first at Presbyterian University and then at Georgia Southern. He realized his dream of becoming a football coach in 1986, when he joined the staff of McIntosh County Academy as an assistant coach and social studies teacher. He was chosen as the school's STAR Teacher twice and was honored with the dedication of the school's yearbook. He was promoted to Head Football Coach at MCA in 1994, leading the Bucs to their first state Playoff berth in his first season. This feat is memorialized on a sign in the east end zone of Buccaneer's field. After a successful second season, Coach Asbell moved on to Groves High School in Savannah and finally returned home as a member of John Willis's staff at Brunswick High School in 2000. He was later honored as the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year and remained at BHS until he retired in 2011. He was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity and the Professional Educators Association of Georgia. His deadpan humor, infectious attitude and winning ways will be greatly missed by both his family and friends alike.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Jeannie Falagan Asbell, who was his soul mate and the love of his life. Other survivors include his little brother, Rob and sister-in-law, Candy, of Brunswick, and his nephew, Adam Manning of Brunswick.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 am Wednesday, July 18th, 2012 at the Darien Church of God with Rev. Tommy Whaley and Rev. Richard Aston presiding.
