*** Corporal Colombo was a member of the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 164, Marine Air Group 16, 1st Marine Air Wing. On March 6, 1968, he was Crew Chief on a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A). He was on a maintenance test flight from the Amphibious Assault Ship USS VALLEY FORGE (LPH-8) when it crashed into the South China Sea. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.


You may be gone, no longer living on this earth; but you will live on - in the memories of your family and friends. There will always be a part of you living in me, your brother, sisters and those who knew you and loved you. You will live on because we remember you!

Gary and Gerald were flying off ship when they had a double flame out and crashed in the ocean. Gerald was at the gun on the left side of the bird and Gary was standing in the door. Gerald made it out over the gun. Gary's body was never found. The hardest thing I ever did in my life was to stop in Wallawalla to see Gary's family.
My friends, you are all missed.
