John Augustus was born in 1871 in Coweta County Georgia. He was a farmer. His family moved to Franklin County Alabama before 1900. He married Ida Roda Arnold in 1903. They had 10 children, John Samuel, b. 1903, David Bryant, b 1905, Ezra Lee, b 1907, Maudie Elizabeth, b 1909, Mary Ann "Mollie", b 1910, Robert Toomer, b 1913, Sallie Lorene, b 1916, Velva Lude, b 1919, Thomas Edison, b 1921 and Douglas Earnest, b 1923. Gus and Ida moved the family to Itawamba County Mississippi in 1926 and then to St Francis County, Arkansas in 1928 where they lived until 1945. They moved to Memphis Tennessee to be near one of their children and lived there until death.
