Last Rites Set For Local Boy, Killed Overseas

Services will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. in Mother of Sorrows church for Sgt. Henry Bongiorno, 315 Shady Ave., who was killed in England on June 23, 1943.
The body will arrive at 7:35 p.m. tonight by Pennsylvania Railroad train. He was serving with the U.S. Air Force and was reported to have been killed by a premature explosion of a bomb.
Henry Bongiorno was born in Charleroi, January 14, 1913, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Bongiorno, and educated in Charleroi schools. He was a member of Mother of Sorrows church and the Turneis Society. he was an electrician at Pittsburgh Steel Co. before entering the service.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Bongiorno, one child, his parents; seven brother and four sisters, who include, Sam, Thomas, Paul of Charleroi; Anthony of Fairhope; Joseph, Monongahela; Philip at home, Frank in California state; Mrs. Anna Beneditti, Mrs. Bessie Sutch, Charleroi; Mrs. Sara Osiol, Donora and Miss Mary Bongiorno at home. Requiem high mass will be sung at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church by Rev. J.J. Thomas. Interment will be in Belle Vernon cemetery.
Caisson Used For Soldier's Final Rites
Escorted by his wartime buddies, the body of Sgt. Henry Bongiorno, killed in England June 23, 1943, was born to his last resting place in Belle Vernon cemetery today on a military Caisson.
Uniformed soldiers comprised the pallbearers who escorted the caisson, which was loaned for the occasion by Belle Vernon service groups. The VFW Charleroi post No. 167 firing squad headed the procession from Slezak's Funeral Home to Mother of Sorrows Church. The VFW Color guard completed the military procession, first to use a caisson for a military re-burial here.
