Lynnwood Flier Listed Killed On 17th Mission

Lt. Herbert C. Konecheck, 28, who was reported missing in action on July 19, 1944 is now presumed dead by the War Department, according to a letter received by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Geho Konecheck, of Lynnwood. The War Department wrote Mrs. Konecheck that all indications of investigations conducted during the past year led to a presumptive finding of death.
Lieutenant Konecheck, who enlisted in the Air Corps on Sept. 12, 1942, was a crewman on a B-17 Flying Fortress and was lost on a bombing mission over Augsburg, Germany. According to reports the Fortress was on its way to an enemy target when it was attacked by enemy fighter planes. The Fortress, which was carrying 3700 tons of bombs, exploded when it fell. One of the two crewmen who parachuted to safety wrote Mrs. Konecheck that the bomb bay door jammed and could not be opened to release the bombs. At the time Lieutenant Konecheck was on his 17th mission.
A graduate of Rostraver High School, he was commissioned at Stockton Field, Calif., on Aug. 29, 1943. He worked at the Duwall Lumber Company in Belle Vernon and the Eggers Lumber Company at Brownsville before enlisting.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Konecheck, Lynnwood; two brothers, William, of Belle Vernon, and Pfc. Norman, in England; and three sisters, Mrs. Katherine Boltz, Lynnwood; Mrs. Emma Jernberg, Beaver Falls, and Mrs. Emma Hackenson, Belle Vernon.

Konecheck-First Lieutenant Herbert Konecheck, 27, died July 19, 1944 in Germany. His body will arrive in Charleroi, November 11, 1950 at 10 a.m. and will be taken to the Toner Funeral Home, where friends will be received Saturday evening after seven o'clock. Military services will be held there Monday, November 13, at 2 p.m. in charge of Rev. Charles E. Fair, pastor of the Lynnwood Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in the Belle Vernon cemetery.
