Her father placed her for adoption with Steve Powell and Leila Powell in Stamford.
Steve Powell worked for the SMS Ranch in a position that allowed him to live in his own house in town and not at the ranch. His occupation is unknown. He was seriously injured at some point and could not work. The Powell family moved to Dallas around 1921 to be near Leila's family, the Dickies. They lived across the street from Leila's brother, Emmett Dickie, who probably supported them.
Steve did not move with them but did visit them intermittently.
At some point, Leila asked the Edd Jones and Maye Jones family who had adopted her sister to take Bessie. They gladly took Bessie in and the sisters were reunited.
Maye Jones believed all girls should be educated and have the social graces. Both girls were required to take piano lessons and they both became very accomplished pianists. They were well known for their piano recitals.
When Bessie was about 15, she was caught kissing a neighborhood boy by the name of A. D. Walton. Fearing they were closely related, Bessie was sent back to the Powell family in Ft. Worth where she finished high school. Genealogical research proved that A. D. was the great grandson of the husband of a second cousin four times removed. Aunt Bessie, it was ok for you to kiss him.
Bessie married first J. Ray Jones who was a wildcatter on oil wells. She was always able to get a job at a Ford dealership wherever her husband worked. This marriage ended in divorce and Bessie married second, Paul D. Hine. They were together until his death in 1971. Bessie never had any children.
Hine, Betsy L., 98, secretary, died Friday. Service 10 a.m. Tuesday, Rose Hill Mausoleum. Ninde Brookside. (Tulsa World)
