Troy was born June 15, 1955, to Bill and Nancy Kelly of Buena Vista. He spent his childhood years growing up on the Kelly Ranch in Buena Vista raising and showing Hereford cattle in 4-H. Troy graduated from Buena Vista High School in 1973. He attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, and continued his study of commercial art in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Troy's artistic flare and style took him to Santa Fe, New York City and Los Angeles, before returning to Buena Vista in 1997 to help care for his mother. Troy's contribution to and love of local theater were unparalleled. He was a driving force and integral part of High Country Fine Arts Association. He is best remembered for his original set designs and his uniquely flamboyant characterizations and monologues in various local theater productions.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Nancy Kelly of Buena Vista; paternal grandparents, William Troy and Mary Elizabeth Kelly of Buena Vista; and maternal grandparents, Richard H. and Nancy V. Cagle of Colorado Springs. Survivors include his sister of Colorado Springs; brother of Aurora; partner of Buena Vista; and extended family and friends.
A celebration of Troy's life was held at Darren Patterson Christian Academy Dec. 20 at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Troy Kelly Memorial fund through Collegiate Peaks Bank in Buena Vista and Salida, to help defray medical costs.
