Founder of Museum of the American Indian (1922), Explorer's Club president

Heye created the Museum of the American Indian in 1916 in New York City and was its director until 1956. His collection of Native American materials was gathered over a period of 45 years. This collection became the basis of the National Museum of the American Indian. The largest in the world, it contains over one million objects from Native Americans. It was transferred to the Smithsonian in 1989, and the Museum of the American Indian is located in lower Manhattan in the landmark Customs House at the foot of Broadway.
