At the age of 16, Elwin began working at International Smelting and Refining during the summer and weekends and eventually retired from Anaconda as assistant superintendent and foreman with 28 years of service. Later, Elwin was employed at Barrick-Mercur Gold Mine. Elwin retired from the Utah Army National Guard where he achieved the rank of Captain and served as company commander.
