Alfred A. Schulz, former San Diego realtor and volunteer with Special Delivery San Diego, the organization which prepares and delivers meals to people living with HIV/AIDS, died of complications of AIDS at his San Diego residence on Friday, October 29, 1993 at 1am, after a three year battle with the illness. He was 54 years old.

Born and raised in Germany, Schulz (mother's maiden name was Dawal) migrated to the United States in 1963 and settled in New York City. He graduated from Bernard Baruch College of the City University of New York and pursued a career in the import/export business for many years before moving to San Diego in 1979. He was associated with Pearce Realty of Lemon Grove, and Professional Real, Estate Realtors of San Diego, until illness forced his retirement.

Known by his family and friends for his self- effacing modesty and fierce loyalty, Alfred was an avid hiker, desert camper, amateur gardener and very skilled handyman who believed in doing precision work. He was a member of Dignity, San Diego, the organization for gay and lesbian Catholics and their friends, serving two terms as its treasurer.

He is survived by his companion of 19 years, Stan Lewis, Chief of Staff to San Diego City Councilmember, Valerie Stallings, as well as brothers Alfons and Norbert, nephew Elmar, and sister-in-law Lucy, in Germany.

Schulz was cremated and a memorial mass in his honor will be held on Saturday November 13, 1993 at 2pm at the Metropolitan Community Church in North Park.

Togetherness

Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room. Whatever we were to each, that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be spoken without effort. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was: there is absolutely unbro ken continuity. Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near just around the corner. All is well. Noth- ing is past: nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before, only better, infinitely happier and forever. We will all be one together with Christ.
