Betty Lu Hill Nickell
AUSTIN,TX.-Betty Lu Hill Nickell passed away on June 11, 2009, in Austin, Texas, after several years of declining health. She was born in Stroud, Oklahoma, to R. L. and Ola Hill on June 27, 1925.
As a young girl, she moved to Harlingen in 1928, where her parents were partners in the first ice business in the Rio Grande Valley. She grew up on Taylor Street in an historic home built by her father, which is currently a bed and breakfast known as Casa Rama. She took voice, piano, tap and ballet classes and performed at The Harlingen Auditorium. She graduated Salutatorian from Harlingen High School in 1942. She attended Wellesley College in Boston. Because of WW II and the death of her father she transferred to the University of Texas in Austin to be closer to her mother. While at The University of Texas she worked as a society editor for the Daily Texan. She was President of her sorority Kappa Alpha Theta. Recognized for leadership, scholarship and service she was a member of the Mortar Board. She graduated Suma Cum Laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After graduating from college she moved to the valley where she worked at the Valley Morning Star as a photographer/reporter for a brief period. In 1949 she married Dr. David Nickell. She devoted her life to being a loving wife and mother of her four children.
In her many years in the valley, Betty Lu and her husband made numerous medical missionary trips to Mexico, Central American, and Africa. A faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, she loved preparing for and teaching her ladies' Sunday School class.
She is preceded in death by her parents R. L. and Ola Hill, husband Dr. David F. Nickell, sister Louise and her husband Edmund McDonald, all of Harlingen. She is survived by her sons David F. Nickell, II, and wife Mary of Rowlett, Robert Nickell and wife Carolyn of Austin, daughters Becky Marek and husband Larry of San Antonio and Georgana Tudor and husband Ben of Cincinnati, Ohio, three grandchildren Christie, Joshua and Trey, five great grandchildren, Rachel, Benjamin, Veronica, Aiden and David Trey III.Her family is thankful to God for her long and productive life and her devout Christian witness. Betty Lu is now resting in the loving arms of her Heavenly Father.
A graveside service will be held at Mont Meta Cemetery Friday, June 19th at 11:00am.
