Father John Bradley, CSP, was born in Toronto, Ontario, on July 8, 1917. He attended St. Peter's Church and was a member of the parish boys' choir directed by Fr. Charles Casserly, CSP.
Brad entered the Paulist minor seminary in 1932, and made first promises on September 3, 1938. He was ordained a Catholic priest on January 25, 1944, a member of the "Peerless Class of 1944" (self-named by the class!) that also included Fathers Ed Lawler, Joe Flynn, Bill Manning, Richard Walsh, Frank Ryan and Dick Payne.
Father Bradley's first assignment as a priest was to be a missionary in South Africa. In 1948 he was transferred to the Paulist mission band based in Winchester, Tennessee. In 1953 he was assigned to the mission band based at St. Paul the Apostle parish in New York, and in 1962 to the band based in San Francisco. In 1966 he joined the staff of the Paulist Center on Park Street in Boston. In 1969 he was assigned to serve as a curate at the parish of Santa Susanna's in Rome.
In 1970 Father Bradley returned to the staff of Good Shepherd parish in New York. He served there until 1978 when he took up a position as chaplain at the Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona.
In declining health, Father Bradley moved to Saint Paul the Apostle parish in New York in 1982. He died in New York City in 1994 at the age of 77 in his 50th year of priesthood.
At his funeral, Father Joe Flynn, CSP, recalled that "in all his ministry, Brad brought grace, concern, compassion, and a humanity that gently touched the hearts of the troubled. He was a priest who brought joy to others. He was positive and upbeat in his relationships, and believed life was too short to be ‘down' or ‘negative' about it. He always looked ahead to the next day, the next opportunity to serve."
