UPDATED 13, APRIL 2013: I have recently come into possession of most of Teddy's Civil War papers (copies of them, rather), and I have updated and corrected the information on this page, accordingly; however, there is a great deal more to go through and decipher, including the new information that all of Teddy's papers state that he was "assassinated by rebel guerillas", the papers showing that his mother Gertrude fought for her son's benefits after his death, the proof that Teddy's father had in fact already died in 1848, before the family ever left Prussia - I will keep updating and correcting as I sort through this, and any relatives with ANY verified knowledge of this gentleman - PLEASE CONTACT ME! I have now discovered documentation that Theodore was one of my great-great grandfather Michael William's brothers; this makes him my great-great uncle, and I am presently working on verifying information about his parents, Johann and Gertrude.
'Teddy Boy' mustered into the Civil War at Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 5, 1861; he joined at Potosi, Wisconsin, according to the document at right. New paperwork states that Teddy Boy volunteered for a three year service; the fact that he was born outside the United States either does not seem to matter during this specific time in history, or Teddy kept this information to himself.
He is 18 years old at this point, and so we can estimate his birth year as 1843.
Teddy Boy has remained vivid in a family line which did not seem to keep many records at all, due to his death. He was 'shot in the back' while riding atop a train, either as the train was moving very slowly down the track, or while it was stopped and loading - I would assume that this means either coal, etc. or other soldiers.
I am also posting the casualty sheet noting Teddy Boy's death - I literally just came across it, minutes ago, as I was working on this page. =) You will be able to note my own mother's handwriting across the top, trying to identify Teddy Boy as "next oldest to brother, Mike". I have not been able to get too far with that notation, yet.
I do not know whether Teddy Boy was sent home - very doubtful - or whether his remains are buried/traceable in any way.
